Chris,

One other thing to consider would be to set it up so
that the kids have a seperate game close but win the
same prize for gathering the most items or points.
That would make them feel important to be competing
for the same prize as the grown ups. 

If the kids hunt I would suggest a seperate game
though as the parents will be helping the kids and
then they would have an unfair advantage in the
grownup hunt or they would not participate in the main
hunt because they helped the kids.
