In general, it seems that Garmins have the higher marks of all the names bandied about. It's coming down to a matter of model number. From: milwginny@xxxxxxx To: geocaching@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [GeoStL] Re: GPS units Date: Wed, 9 Jan 2013 17:36:34 -0600 We’ve had a DeLorme and liked it – until the little plastic piece that holds the batteries broke and we discovered it can’t be fixed!! Expensive unit – and all they could offer was refurbished unit (the same one, with the same plastic piece they admitted frequently breaks) for another $100. We now have a Garmin and it’s good, but NOT paperless. Another problem with DeLorme was getting pocket queries on it – we never did manage that. And we haven’t figured out this function on the Garmin. We do use my smartphone as a secondary unit (for batter reasons), and I got a power pack (backup power for phone) for Christmas. The smartphone app brings up pocket queries automatically which I love! We’re looking at maybe getting a Garmin e-Trex 30 this spring...but will talk with folks at potluck. Oh – we use our TomTom to get to the general area of the cache, but it stays in the car – the Garmin and phone do the work from there! We may have to replace it. We have 2 GPS's a Delorme PN60 and a Garmin GS map 62. Both are great for geocaching! We bought a PN 60 at best buy for a present for my mother in law. It was 250.00. It basicly is a matter of preference they operate a little different. I like the Delorme maps better! I also use my I phone but not to locate caches. After loosing an I phone in the woods once I would never use it as a solo source of caching. To easily broken also. But great for finding caches on the fly and logging on the go. More advice take what you wish throw out the rest. Honestly if you want to go caching with us to use our devices so you can decide just ask. I'm starting to research GPS units in preparation for attending MOGA. I don't know where to start. There are lots of units and vendors out there and I don't know what to look for. Currently, my GPS is the Geocaching app on my iPhone 4, which has a lousy battery life. Suggestions on what features I should look for in a unit would be appreciated. Thanks! Spiritwolf922
