Well, base 8 is where 0004 + 0004 = 0010, which coincides with the picture
clues. However, in base 8 I would expect to see eight different dot types
to represent the digits 0 through 7, and best I can tell there are only four
different dot types. So, I don't know if this is helpful or not, but could
kick start other ideas.....
