I don't think the issue is the volume of the NCR, but rather if politics,
religion, abortion, gun control, sexual orientation, and other controversial
topics should be allowed to be discussed on the list. Do we want the list
to be limited to family orientated fun or do we want the list to be a place
where we fight over controversial and offensive topics?

Surely many people don't share the view that has been expressed on guns and
certainly many people would find that type of discussion offensive. While I
don't find the gun control stuff offensive, I do not think it should be
allowed on the list since it is a divisive issue. I just got back visiting
a friend in the ICU who is dying from second hand smoke. I find people
talking about their "right" to kill innocent people via smoking offensive
and do not think that type of divisive issue should be allowed. We have had
people on this list bragging about how they work to increase their carbon
footprint. That also increases pollution which kills and makes people
(particularly kids) sick. I consider people like that worse than child
molesters and find that very offensive. I can see how a parent with a child
with asthma would want to use a concealed weapon against someone who tries
to harm and kill their kids by intentionally increasing their emissions of
pollutants that makes their kids sick. Why should this kind of discussion
be allowed on this list? I am sure some will find some of the things I just
said offensive which is another reason why this kind of stuff should be off
limits.

How does allowing these kinds of divisive issues to be discussed further and
improve geocaching? I would think reading comments on the list that you find
offensive would make you not want to be associated with SLAGA. Talking
about what kind of window to get is fine, it is not divisive. Talking about
divisive issues can result in nasty discussions on the list. Should not the
discussion be limited to geocaching and non divisive issues?

I hope there can be something in the list info about this and I hope Glenn
will not allow divisive issues to be discussed on the list.

I agree that the NGR chat has been busy as of late, but I don't think it
warrants a different mailing list.  This list gets few emails as it is.

I would venture to guess that many of you don't only talk geocaching at
picnics or other events.  I'll also guess you don't only talk about work
when you're there (if you work).  I see no problem with the NGR chat, as
long as it's prefaced with "NGR".

If you don't like the discussion at hand, delete the emails associated with
it without reading them.  Yes, it's a bother for you, but a small one
compared to other problems you see daily.

While I'll admit the chat on handguns may have gone on several tangents that
took it far beyond the original question, most other NGR topics are short
and simple (i.e., Bernie asking about window contractors).  These topics are
what I imagined the list to be about.

We all have a common interest and most of us share other interests as well.
That's what makes a group stay together.  If all we talked about was
geocaching, we'd run out of topics very quickly.  These topics would
rehashed over and over and we would simply give links to the archives when a
new person asked the question.  How friendly is that?
