In the early days of caching, writing and reading logs was a major part of
the experience. Some may find this hard to believe, but in the early days
of caching we would actually use the log books to write a log about our
experience. No one would ever just sign their name, you wrote about your
experience on the log. I used to enjoy sitting at a cache reading about
others adventure finding it. Nowadays its about scribbling your name or
initial on the log as fast as possible to get onto the next cache. It was
the same thing on the cache page. Cachers wrote about their experience
instead of TFTC. But then again, what can you say about the 1.000 lamppost
cache you found?

I like to encourage people to hide decent caches too. But I have decided I
am no longer going to say "thanks" in a log for the types of caches I wish
people would stop hiding. If you thank someone for hiding a cache on a
lamppost in a Walmart (for which they likely did not obtain permission),
does not that encourage them to hide crapy caches? I try to avoid these
kinds of caches. But since you cannot filter them out, there is no way to
avoid them.

I wish the rules requiring you to obtain permission before you hide a cache
on private property (i.e., Walmarts, shopping centers, etc.) would be
enforced. Surely a very large percentage of these its all about numbers
caches violate the rules as they have not obtained permission to place them
in a parking lot of a business.
