It would help me understand the problem if you could make a completely clean installation, that is e.g.

cd /tmp
git clone git://www.geeqie.org/geeqie.git
cd geeqie
./autogen.sh
make -j

If you still get errors, I will then install Mint on a spare computer and try to find exactly where the problem is.
