The factors that are likely to influence this behaviour are:

show star rating

sort by exif date or star rating

read metadata in background (on Preferences/Metadata)


You may also find that pressing the Refresh button on the toolbar will trigger the display of thumbnails.


To help to isolate where the problem is could you create a folder with a small number of standard jpegs, and see if the problem exists there?
