Hi everyone,
I have submitted a delegation request for the May 27th Kitchener council
meeting. They haven't confirmed yet but I expect to get that confirmation in
the next few days.
Referring to the diagram in our last meeting minutes, we were thinking of a
Phase 1 potentially implemented this summer:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1JzsYnRrW7dqCAKPL-Sk_ANIuaFAk67yoPXSNLRbLWfU/edit?ts=5cbb81f6
After talking with Barry Cronkite again, and getting more details about Charlie
West construction needs, I think we will get a lot of pushback trying to
implement this so quickly. The concrete trucks will be driving up and down that
area almost every day – that's more frequently than I would have imagined.
Sarah Brown pointed out that the city's Placemaking Challenge Grant is open for
submissions – what if we prepared an application for this grant, say $2000, to
transform the space for a temporary pop-up weekend? The Placemaking Challenge
weekend in September 27th. This still lets us animate the space in a really
fun, active planned event.
I'm thinking we can buy a bunch of sod and grass over the Phase 1 area of
Gaukel Street. A really transformative, but temporary, intervention. This would
set the stage for a more permanent road closure in November.
What do you all think about this plan? We would have to get moving on our
Placemaking Challenge grant application and council presentation, but I want to
make sure everyone's on the same page.
