Correction: There are no bike lanes on King Street West. The only part
of King Street with bike lanes is part of King Street North in Uptown
Waterloo.
Also, Water Street's bike lanes turn into sharrows (painted in black,
because residents apparently didn't want green paint in a heritage
district) beyond Joseph.
Water Street is not a great bike route into the park (I say this as
someone who was nearly killed in the stretch between King and Charles
while in the bike lane, when some courteous driver travelling in the
same direction as I was waved at someone to turn left into my path).

I think we should drop the cycletrack option here as it is going to be an
albatross In gaining public support.
There has been some backlash from the public already and I have recently seen
why. I was up in the King W. area near the hospital area and I can see why.
That strip has two ION lanes, two traffic lanes and two bike lanes. What is
the matter with this picture? Well they have apparently removed the
boulevards to put in the bike lanes so that snowplows are going to put snow
up on the sidewalks. I will bet that this displeases a lot of people esp. in
an area with a hospital, public school etc. Technically it is illegal to
shovel your snow out into the street. (A fact discovered from personal
experience.)
If Gaukel is poor for vehicle traffic it is also poor for bikes. water St. is
already marked for bike lanes and is a much better option all round.
This is really a small area and bike lanes are going to be at the expense of
green space.

Hi everyone,
Sorry for the late update. We had an amazing, productive, inspiring
discussion on Saturday. The dream of Gaukel Greenway seems tangible!
We got down to brass tacks and discussed what a Phase 1 and 2 of the project
could look like. We decided to try and prepare a delegation for the May 27th
meeting.
Here are my notes, including next steps for action:

How was the meeting? It looked like a wonderful day for an outside meeting,
that's for sure (I was cooped up in a school gymnasium all day)!

Hey everyone! I'm excited to meet on Gaukel during this lovely sunny
Saturday.
See you at 1pm at the fountain @ Charles & Gaukel.
A loose agenda for the afternoon:
1pm-1:30pm walk around, talk about our vision for the space. Consider how
we want the phases to unfold. Get creative with our imaginations!
1:30pm-1:35pm take a #gaukelselfie
1:35pm-2:30pm head inside to the Arts hub at 44 Gaukel. (Thanks for the
space, Alex!) Decide when we plan to present at Kitchener council.
- One group drafting a presentation for council
- Another group sketching and creating drawings / design ideas
- A third group setting up meetings with all councillors, senior staff, and
committees
See you all soon!
