Hi everyone,

There have been quite a few developments since the last time everyone was
given the opportunity to speak with Steve about our progress, so we have
scheduled a call for this Monday, February 29, 2016 from 6:30 to 7:30. He
will go over our progress to date for about 20 minutes then open up the call
for questions.

Here's what you should know before the call:

We hired Steve last September to help us work on art therapy licensure for:
title protection, to protect the public from being harmed by non-art
therapists claiming to practice art therapy, and so that those who cannot
afford art therapy out-of-pocket can have access to art therapy through
managed care. He began meeting with legislators on our behalf and has since
then worked diligently for our cause.

In October, we were made aware of a Supreme Court decision that the GA State
Licensing Board (and many others) are unconstitutional relating to the
potential for violations of federal anti-trust/restraint of trade laws for
actions by hybrid state licensure boards (i.e., boards that consist
primarily of practitioners of the profession regulated by the board) that
are determined to limit competition or bar groups from gaining licensure or
engaging in a profession or occupation.  At the time, it looked like the GA
State Licensing Board would have to completely restructure its system and no
other licenses would be able to go through registration for years.

Steve encouraged us to not give up and met with the GA Secretary of State,
who recommended that we create a Registration. The Registration would be a
step towards licensure, would help us gain licensure in the future, would
bring awareness to legislators about art therapy (which would help with
licensure in the future), it would validate art therapy in Georgia, make it
so that non-art therapists could not claim to provide art therapy. (AATA's
Director of Public Policy informed us that they were aware of the Supreme
Court ruling and two other states have created a Registration).

Susanne and I met with the GA Secretary of State on January 25th to discuss
registration and licensure. This meeting really opened up some doors for us
and licensure is now back on the table. The Georgia Secretary of State's
Licensing Board has created a layer of appeals so that they are now in
compliance with the Constitution.

In obtaining licensure, it is much easier and faster to exist under a
current licensing board. However, legislation will still need to pass (ie.
congress will still need to vote on it). The GA Secretary of State
recommended that we go under the Music Therapy Board. They are fully aware
that we are different, they are just looking for an avenue to fall under. We
would have completely separate standards than Music Therapists.

Steve is going to speak with everyone about this and the next steps. He also
will be available for any questions. If you are not able to be part of this
meeting, we will schedule another in the future; however, this is the time
he has given us for now.
