You guys should take a look at Todd Geist’s excellent presentation from DevCon
last year: JavaScript is eating the world:
https://www.geistinteractive.com/2016/09/19/javascript-eating-filemaker-world-video/
It’s a good place to start.
As for being overwhelmed by all that there is to learn - I was just at the
Smashing Conference in SF:
https://smashingconf.com/sf-2017/
It was mostly attended by front-end developers, people who do nothing but work
with this stuff all day, and even those people are overwhelmed. New tools and
techniques come out all the time, and no one can keep up.
To make it simple, someone put together a site that’s billed as Javascript
explained so your cat could understand it:
http://jsforcats.com
This is a blog you might want to check out:

…and this might also be of interest:

Jon,
It seems like we've always been in the same boat! I'll help bail as soon as I
learn how, I'm sure you'll do likewise.

Troy,
I am in the same boat. I rebuilt the web app in FX.PHP (as opposed to
using a code writing software, FMStudio, to do it. Wanted to use AJAZ
ad JQueary. Purchased a book called the jQuery Cookbook. It assumed I
knew more than I do, or I am just lazy enough in my retirement to NOT
want to do all the work to learn it.
I don’t know where to start.
