Good question, and one which I’ve asked myself many times.
I’ll probably retire. :D
I don’t say this often, but I will mention that I’ve not been pleased with how
FileMaker Inc. has been going in regard to pricing and licensing, especially
when it comes to small hosting companies like mine. They changed their license
to make it against the rules to put multiple clients on one instance of FM
Server, so that means forcing clients to lease their own servers.
They seem to be pushing WebDirect more and more, to the exclusion of web apps;
I’m not a fan of WebDirect, preferring to write a good web application that is
royalty-free, as opposed to forcing clients to pay for WebDirect. In addition,
as we all know, WebDirect isn’t suitable for web applications where large
numbers of users may potentially use it at the same time.
My couch is looking better and better. :)
For now, my hosting company is doing well, I’m still supporting clients and
writing new solutions, but to quote the Magic 8-Ball, the future is cloudy.

*NOTE: The XML API has not yet been deprecated, and will presumably remain in
at least the next couple/few/… versions of FMS. (Runtimes have been
deprecated for years but not yet removed.)
