Actually the layout was fine. It was a text field contents, last character, in
just one record. The layout didn't NEED any fields to accomplish the WPE test,
so to avoid the problem I just made a new empty layout, which then stopped
producing the error. Then I dropped fields in until I found one the caused the
error. Then I switched to a find-by -recid to pin down the record.
Yes, long ago I did have the odd corrupted layout. I'm glad that wasn't it,
those are so difficult!

Wow! I forgot about the corrupt layout problem. I haven’t seen that in a
long time, thankfully. Glad you have the problem sighted.
