Another approach would be to use the open-source library PHPExcel to parse the
Excel file once uploaded.
It works very well, and the example PHP scripts should get you a long way
towards your goal.

I have a client whose database (a half-dozen or so fields) gets regularly
updated with new records.
The client is asking if it would be possible for me to write something for
the web that would allow them to take a spreadsheet and import all the
records en masse.
In other words, it’d be great if I could write a PHP routine that would
allow the user to select an XLS file, then somehow read it and import the
records into FileMaker.
Has anyone done one of these?
I’m thinking that if it’s comma-delimited, I could simply have them select
the file, read the text into a variable, and then parse out the records.
Any thoughts from this august gathering?
