thank you all for showing interest in my effort;

*to jatheendra

*

   1. no desktop not shown

By desktop do you mean icons ?

it is one of my default folder, which usually shown at starting.
it was properly shown for complete desktop environments like gnome, ked,
xfce, lxde, etc.

*to manukrishnan

*if you are ready to take some effort you can do more;

from my knowledge desktop environment is a collection of software, some will
run during star up and some will run manually.

the load on the system not determined by the desktop environment only. the
application you're running also plays a good role.

we can approximately say that, the load on the system determined by

   - kernel
   - applications running during start up like
   -
      - window manager
      - panel
      - tray applets
      - applications like
         - power manager
         - volume control
         - update manager
         - system clock
         - applications for showing desktop folder etc.
      - normal applications like
      - fire-fox
      - open office
      - nautilus etc.

from my observation

*1*.
 the gnewSense requires less resources than ubuntu or Debian kernel,
ubuntu kernel need maximum resources which i ever had seen.

all the above systems use Linux as kernel, but the difference is in its
version and the number of default drivers installed.

if gnewSense can support all of your drivers, the it will be the best
choice.

*2.
*the choice of start up application is yours.

   - each window manager has its own advantages and disadvantage. i had
   tried a lot and out of them pekwm seem to be optimum.
   - the panel is also your choice; some people use only panel, without even
   a panel.
   - menu manager- it is also your choice, some window manger(fluxbox), and
   panel(fbpanel) has built in menu.
   - the choice of file manager is also critical. it should support all file
   system and should have good user interface. thunar and pcmfile mangers are
   good choice.
   - the choice other applications like tray applet, application showing
   desktop, also depend on the panel and window manger.

*3.*
the applications should satisfy your requirements. you have to chose it from
the available one. each one has its own advantage and disadvantage. my best
choice are very heavy;

   - fire-fox >Internet browser
   - open-office> document processor.

from point of view a desktop environment should have at least;

   - a window manager
   - panel
   - menu
   - file manager
