Dear EC members, peers,

I have created a account in thingiverse, which i would like to share
with EC, if necessary. Also the account details of hackaday.io.

Even though platform wise they are not transparent, both have created a
global social platform where makers, tinkerers, remixers, repair
practitioners can engage in conversation to collaboratively create
something.

It is very highly similar to something in software dev and design. Think
of GIT with Social network.

Since the 3D printer has been built by Ranjith with the few help and
guidance from Ragulkanth, we need to progress it further with other
infrastructure elements we have in hand. For instance, telescope,
spectroscope,...

The possibility of having a 3d printer gives us a leap frog capacity to
start making instruments, not just machines. I hope i can able to give a
neat introduction to physical computing, making and its history one day.

We can make :

1. Physical Computing environment for applications of Computational
Electro Magnetics (EM) :

 1. 3d printed antenna structures (ex: quadrifilar helical structure for
getting Realtime sat images from NOAA)
    a. we can be local weather man
 2. support for RTL SDR to interface with the antenna
 3. use the system for other Radio based projects too.
 4. Use GNURadio, GQRX, Pothos, Gpredit and other FOSS libraries to
bring up a proper system
 5. Possibly extend the experience to SATNOGS

2. Physical Computing environment for applications of Computational
Optics (special case of EM) :

 1. 3d printed enclosures for Telescope computer (RPi)
 2. 3d printed enclosures for Telescope azimuth, elevation system to
point a particular object with angle info from stellarium (FOSS)
 3. 3d printed support for smart phone mounting directly to eye piece
 4. Relay the video graph and other analysis of tracking to public using
our dedicated server (possibly of building a super cool web app)

3. Rugged Field Recovery kit for Nautical applications : (this is not a
boring final year project, it is serious)

 1. 3d printed housings for location aware fishing (RPi)
 2. Load it with open NMEA standard sensor interfaces
 3. S/W : OpenCPN
 4. Possibly integrate it with pressure, oxygen sensors for divers for
health hazard and monitoring (dashboards)
 5. Collect and secure fish breeding, monitor algal blooming, bird
congregations, dolphin interactions etc...
 6. Encrypt and share the ecological and fishing information with only
the locals and fisher folks
 7. Build SONAR for sea bed change monitoring
 8. Biodiversity monitoring for under sea species based on earlier study
in Mediterranean

4. VTOL or standard Airborne devices (UAV) for Spatiao-Temporal
applications :

 1. 3d print a modular wings, wing-lets, structures to build a UAV (i
wont vote for quadcopter - its fuel inefficient)
 2. portable launch pad & HOT Air balloons
 3. GPS, RF comm support
 4. Use Open Drone Mapping and Open Aerial Mapping for stitching
collected images within geofenced villages/hamlets along coast (after
social
    and legal permit)
 5. Data analytics and reporting based on statistics on change of land
use and water use

6. Weather stations for Computational weather applications :

 1. Build a strong, ease to build metal structure for weather station
 2. Build hooks in the structure to easily mount weather housings and
sensors in it
 3. Build wiring (bus) network that is easy to speak to the onboard
computer
 4. Integrate with rechargeable solar power supply and battery unit
 5. Integrate with a proper long range antenna system for reliable
communications and networking - to collect and share data
 6. Integrate the structure with already built Antenna system and use it
for further analysis, error correction, satellite aware/location aware
    weather station

7. Citizen Science - Sensing Toolkit for Sensing, Observation,
Monitoring, Analysis, & Reporting (SOMAR) applications :

 1. Requires gaining more practical knowledge in Circuit designing and
PCB making
 2. Making environmental sensor kit using reliable sensors/transducers
requires high signal integrity till the measurement reaches humans as
    data/information.
 3. Will be useful for remote (on ground) sensing like parabolic
reflectors for acoustic observations in wild areas/forests
 4. water testing, sand testing, etc..
 5. Integratable with HOT balloons or UAV.

These will require our earlier experiences in antenna building, mesh
networking, weather station making, etc... along with learning from
other collectives project like FERAL, PublicLab, Field kit, etc...
GIS/RS, Data analytics, Statistics, Visualization, etc... will also be
required for making the systems useful for public and participation in
long run.

In the age of education trending towards fancy words, collectives like
us struggle to get the attention of students and faculties while they
are constantly gazed by big tech. Such physical computing efforts will
be useful to make them turn and look other way. It can also be thus a
healthier attempt to organize GLUGS too, so that the participating
students in glugs will become more inter disciplinary even in
engineering field and slowly transit towards social sciences overlap in
thinking and action.

regards
Ganesh
