dear friends,
at last night's meeting, we voted to distribute $7,000 to local charities
and others. Half of the money came from our recent fundraiser dinner at the
thatched cottage, which was matched by students for 60,000. the amounts
given vary from $250 to $1,000 and include pronto in bay shore, st. hugh of
lincoln in huntington station, st. anthony outreach in east northport,
ecumenical lay council in northport, huntington community food council in
huntington station, family service league in huntington, its project hope,
family of marcelo lucero killed in patchogue, angel loja, who was also
attacked there and lost his job, friends of andrew to buy toys for kids with
brain cancer, our lady queen of martyrs outreach, and tri community and
youth agency. the checks will be delivered by students before christmas.

kristi lalor is involved in the friends of andrew effort; if you have a
question or would like to make a further contribution, email

pete white expressed concern about friends continuing to accept
tax-deductible donations from indviduals and organizations outside the
group. these funds are then being used for purposes not specifically
authorized by friends, making friends a kind of middle man. he is concerned
that the practice may grow into an even greater bookkeeping chore.

mike cipoletti will travel to nicaragua next week. if you have questions
you'd like him to explore, email ikecip@xxxxxxxx

jen brady-cotter urged that a friends web site be expedited. it would have
links to students, calendars, blogs and other means to keep in touch at one
central site. she will be contacting others with the aim of getting the
long-overdue site running by the start of next year.

jen also noted that she and her husband, pete, will host an event at their
blue point brewing co. in patchogue called "an evening for marcelo's mom."
marcelo lucero of patchogue was killed by a group of teenagers recently near
the brewery. his earnings supported his mother in ecuador. the price is $50
for beer and food, which is supplied by local restaurants. the tasting room
is at 161 river ave. in patchogue; the time is 8 p.m. friday, dec. 12. music
is by jack's waterfall and high school all-star musicians.

happy new year to everyone, and here's a blue point toast to a better 2009.
