You can do this using the peak controller plugin. If you look inside your
fruityloops installation directory, under the loops/Tutorial folder, there
is a demo flp called Gate-effect which demonstrates this technique nicely.
Loading this up and watch the volume on channel 1 (Long Chords), it is
controlled by the Peak Controller in FX track 3 which is fed by the Gating
Rythmn. The reason that you cannot hear the gating rythmn is that the mute
switch is turned on in the bottom right of the peak controller window. The
peak controller is not the easiest thing to get the hang of but it is a very
useful tool to have up your disposal.
I'm currently looking into using the peak controller to generate a gated
reverb effect on drums.
