They've already admitted themselves that they are unable to release Vista
without having it have serious holes for hackers to get through. If they
just realized this a few months before it comes out then there will
certainly still be those holes. Heck, Bill Gates can't even make voice
recognition software work, not turning to Dragon for help, and we trust all
of our personal lives to him...

BTW I'm back and will start to try to make meetings again and get caught
back-up.

WORLD DOMINATION 201

"In the 1990s Linus Torvalds used to give a talk
called World Domination 101 on the early steps he
believed Linux would need to take to achieve
'world domination fast' . We've made a lot of
progress since then, but Linux desktop market
share remains stuck below 5%, which is too low to
garner support from hardware vendors in some
critical areas like graphics and wireless
hardware, and too small a political base from
which to effectively oppose software patents,
hardware DRM, and other horrors. For those within
the Linux community, World Domination 201 is
about how to take advantage of an opportunity to
go the rest of the way. For those outside it,
this is a warning of what's coming if we fail."

THE TRUE COST OF MS VISTA

A Cost Analysis of Windows Vista Content Protection

"Windows Vista includes an extensive reworking of
core OS elements in order to provide content
protection for so-called "premium content",
typically HD data from Blu-Ray and HD-DVD
sources. Providing this protection incurs
considerable costs in terms of system
performance, system stability, technical support
overhead, and hardware and software cost. These
issues affect not only users of Vista but the
entire PC industry, since the effects of the
protection measures extend to cover all hardware
and software that will ever come into contact
with Vista, even if it's not used directly with
Vista (for example hardware in a Macintosh
computer or on a Linux server). This document
analyses the cost involved in Vista's content
protection, and the collateral damage that this
incurs throughout the computer industry."

Peter Gutmann calls Vista the longest suicide
note in history. Peter Gutmann developed the 35-pass Gutmann Wipe used in
DBAN.

GAME OVER

Free Software and Free Media

Eben Moglen says it is game over for proprietary
software monopolists. He declares the software
layer is now free, Microsoft knows it, and Vista
is the evidence. GPL v3.x will address freedom in
the hardware layer. Thick mesh open wireless
networks spell the end of monopoly control of the
network layer. The last layer to liberate will be
government intrusion into citizens lives through media.
