501(c)3 covers non-profit corporations addressing one or more of the
following purposes: charitable, religious, educational, scientific,
literary, testing for public safety, fostering national or international
amateur sports competition, and the prevention of cruelty to children or
animals. 501(c)12 covers non-profit cooperatives which receive 85% or more
of their income from members. MLUG (if incorporated) would qualify for
501(c)3 as an educational organization so long as our meetings/presentations
are open to the public. KLUG (Kalamazoo) has 501(c)3 status.
Freegeek-Michiana should qualify on both the charitable (FreeBox) and
educational (FreeLab).
