hi rachel -
i think that they must set up their organization to be fully funded from
any source other than non-profits. otherwise, it doesn't work.
as for "who doesn't pay for an external evaluation"? well, none of the
non-profits i have evaluated have ever paid a penny for it. all my fees are
paid by the donors. i have evaluted about 500 non-profits in the last 20
years.
in fact, i have been offered money and other incentives by the non-profits
to evaluate their organizations, and i won't do it. conflict of interest....
so, the alternative is simple: don't set up an organization the way midot
has done it. bad business model and bad moral/ethical model.

I hear your point Arnie, but they are in an impossible situation really.
They have to fundraise for Midot, and obviously they have to charge
something for the service of External Evaluation. Who doesn't pay for
External Evaluation?
The problem really is that the Israeli policies don't require the level of
transparency that the US programs do. I presume, but I don't know for sure,
that Charity Navigator rank everyone based on numbers that they get from
their 990 documents.
So the Midot service isn't the same as Charity Navigator. Guidestar
charges for some services of course and they must also fundraise.
We went to the donor that insisted on the Midot seal and asked them to pay
for the process.
I think that their motives are clearly to help elevate the NGO field. I
just think that they are weak specifically on the subject of fundraising.
I wonder what you are suggesting is the alternative? Don't you think we
need some kind of oversight organization. It seems we are better off with
them than without them.
And it is really a problem for organizations that get a bad ranking. But
isn't the answer that they are supposed to improve the things and not just
complain. Many organizations raise millions, spend millions and aren't
effective or at the very least aren't efficient, but just have a well known
name. That isn't good. I for one think it is great that someone is
thinking about best practices, standards, and transparency.
I would rather think of how to help them rather than just attack them or
tear them down.

anyone who charges automatically has a conflict of interest, no? even
they 'prove' that not all charities receive good ratings, etc. it is still
tainted.

seriously???
why aren't we taking that on, instead of agreeing that it's ok....
