Thanks to John Madden's suggestion to turn off the humanize-mime as well as=
turning on the humanize-quotedprintable, my lists are now free of the=20
equals signs -- even messages from those individuals (another one turned up=
after I wrote the original message) who  apparently have qp turned on, a=20
malevolent MTA in-between, or some other bad luck affecting their messages.

That advice is also in the general Freelists FAQ, BTW -- I apologize for=20
not finding it there before posting the question.

Naturally I am a bit worried, though, about leaving lists open to=20
attachments, for the reasons we all know too well. There are always a few=20
people who don't have adequate knowledge and defenses against viruses.
