Hi all
2017 is nearly over and I would like to thank you all for your contributions to
FreeDict. We have achieved so much that I would like to quickly summarise a few
of the most important bits. This wouldn't have been possible without you and
therefore a big thanks to each one of you!
We have seen 151 commits in the fd-dictionaries and 117 commits in the tools
repository. Behind these numbers we find a lot of intrusive changes. First of
all, we moved from a FREEDICTDIR variable, which assumed a static project root
with dictionaries *and* a tools directory to a more modular FREEDICT_TOOLS
variable, allowing dictionaries to be built from anywhere. We also split tools
and dictionaries into two separate repositories. This enabled us to move
auto-imported dictionaries to a separate space outside of git, because generated
files do not need to be in a VCS.
The build system has been largely rewritten and should be slightly more modular
and above all self-documenting.
The XSL style sheets have learned about the colloc tag, export all headwords
present within an entry and a few more things. We also added a new output
format, which catapulted us into the "smart age", because we are mobile now!
The webish part of our project also came to new life. There is work on a
complete rewrite of our web site, a modern collaborative dictionary editing tool
and an API to query about all of this.
On the social side, we organised a HackFest and I personally found this to be a
great source of inspiration and very productive indeed. We should meet again in
2018 and hopefully we can motivate even more members to attend.
There are many, many more projects in the pipeline and if your pet project is
not mentioned here, this is only due to space constraints ;-). It has been
really awesome to work with you. Please keep on with the high quality of your
work!
