We have released an emergency release 2.6.2.1, most notably fixing
build against Qt-5.15. With it, we should avoid removal from Debian,
and derivatives such as Ubuntu. At the time of writing, Debian has a
new source package, but the scheduled removal status has not yet been
cleared.
With the emergency out of the way, we should start preparing to
release all those S2_6 fixes that were not included in the emergency
release. I think we can get 2.6.3 out around January. (Task #899915)
3.0.0-alpha5 will be little more than a snapshot from S3_0. There's
not much work to do specifically for it, just getting S3_0 to a
suitable condition. Major part of that is creating a new msys2
environment snapshot, and starting to use that.
We have some patches that are ready short of testing, and testing
requiring a bit of setup work. So they have not been tested because
lack of time. You can help get them in by testing that they do what
they are supposed to; Bug #874192 and Feature #878898.
About two weeks I've been going through master commits since S2_6 was
branched and development of 3.0 started. That was in the beginning of
2015, so there's six years worth of commits to check for 3.0. So far
I've got to September/2015 commits. So there now is a real effort
going to get 3.0.0-beta1 released, but it will take a long time.
