Reply to Steve's question: Do you have a good tape??? How do you know
the backup is good?

I have tried three different backup tapes (different dates, same
machine) with the same result from all three.

All,
I have done everything suggested so far in responses below to no avail.
I am still getting the "Panic: VFS_mountroot: cannot mount root" error
cycling over and over again as it tries to reboot. I will summarize:

1. We are using version 6.1 Day 0 cd
2. We have a DDS3 tape backup unit using 4mm tapes (backup to a single
tape)
3. We are using QF #991274D tape restore script (on floppy)
4. System is booting fine after Day 0 install.
5. I have tried all of the suggestions so far.
6. Have REM'd out lines in the restore script that have to do with file
system creation and it did not like that at all!
7. Have REM'd out the lines in the restore script which I believe set
up the boot table or sequence. This did not help either.

There is something in the tape restore script which is causing a problem
with restoring the backup to a larger drive with different partition
sizes. Again, the system works fine when just running IA_INSTALL from
the 6.1 DAY 0 cdrom. System boots just fine until I restore from tape.

Again, any help would be appreciated! Also, thanks for the help so far!

After you do a day 0 with the cdrom and the box boots OK
stop A, boot cdrom, restore.
When restoring the tape and you are asked if the tapes were created
using dmp0_8mm, answer Y. when it call for the first tape, use your
tape. When it asks for the second tape leave the tape in the drive and
press enter.
When it asks for the third tape do a ctrl C.
reboot -- -r

Steve,

Thanks for the reply.... I followed the procedure that you posted for
me.... However, I am still getting the same response.... More in
formation to follow:

1. We are using version 6.1 Day 0 cd
2. We have a DDS3 tape backup unit using 4mm tapes (backup to a single
tape)
3. We are using QF #991274D tape restore script (on floppy)
4. System is booting fine after Day 0 install.

Any help would be most appreciated!!!

In case of a drive failure or replacement of a drive that exhibiting
read and write errors, follow this procedure. It covers, installing 6.2
day 0 software on to a AW51B 18 GB hard drive (this is done to set up
the partitions on the drive) and restoring the drive from a backup
tape/tapes.=3D3D20
=3D3D20

Please read the completed procedure, you need to understand it before
proceeding.   =3D3D20

All,
Am attempting to restore an AW51B to a station with 4.2GB hard drive.
Original has a 1GB hard drive I believe. Anyway the restore seems
successful but when rebooting it cycles with "PANIC: vfs_mountroot:
Cannot mount root" Error.
