A variety of options were considered. 

I wanted Solaris on Intel to replace Solaris on SPARC. That way we could 
offer the same hardware with different software. Linux and other open
source solutions are generally not preferred for liability reasons.

At the end of the day, the path we chose was considered to be lower risk 
and lower cost. It didn't really work out that way though.
