Joen,

I learned of an alternative solution two years ago at the International
Convention from a man from South Africa. Their plant made detergents for a
major manufacturer and I wish that I could remember his name to give proper
credit to him.

As I recall, what his plant does is to use Intel machines running Xwindows
in the harsh environments of the production floor. They cost less than
one-tenth the cost of environmentally-hardened machines. He figured that
even if he had to replace the workstations every year, it would still be ten
years before he accrued the cost of hardened systems. And at each
replacement, the workstation was upgraded to the latest technology available
for that cost.

Note that this solution only works in an environment where the workstation
is the only thing that needs protection, and not the environment itself.
This would not work in an environment where the atmospheric dust could be
potentially explosive.
