This might be a little off the current conversation, but could it be a
fiber optic or copper uplink failure? You said that you could log into the
switch using the directly connected laptop with no problem, but can't ping
the switch. Also, the lights are flashing, which suggests that traffic is
being transferred within the switch itself. If the switch were a remote
switch without a workstation, an uplink failure would explain why you can't
ping it.
Basically, could it be one of the following:
1. The Fiber(s) connecting the switch to the mesh.
2. The uplink ports connecting the switch to the mesh.
If these failed instead of the switch, you have a difference problem on
your hands.

When setting up the switch reporting, the trap IP is the sysmon station,
the syslog IP is a station to send log messages to (but you need to have a
logging applic running to capture it). The syslog messages are much more
extensive than the sysmon, so if you have a station to collect them, it's
quite worth it. (Netsight includes a syslog app, but there are others that
run standalone.) At the very least, the syslog messages are saved
internally in the switch and can be extracted with telnet.
When configuring a switch with SCAS, there are several opportunities to
save the configuration - both as a text file on the switch itself, and on
the configuring PC. Naturally, it is good practice to maintain these for
just such an occasion as a total switch failure and a need to re-build the
config.

When replacing a failed Mesh switch (no lights at all) one time, the new
one showed OFFLINE because it had VLAN on (default) in the configuration
when it should have been off to match the existing network. It may be
needed in some cases, depending how your network was set up. Easiest
seems to be to copy the configuration from another (redundant) switch on_____________
your Mesh, then put in the correct letterbug and IP address.
