What we have done on more than one occasion is connect discrete inputs and
outputs between the systems.

Subject: [foxboro] Connecting two PLC through Plant Network
We have two PLC separated by a long distance and there is a purpose to connect
both over the plant network. The objective is that one PLC has to tell the
other to do something, so the connection is not for diagnostic. It seems that
the idea is not good because the plant network is not the right path for
connecting two plc to work together but I do not have any paper, standard or
experience of people who have done this before.
Any comment or idea to share will be greatly appreciated.
