Putting It All Together

Hey everybody, here's a fixturing solution you'll want to sock away in your
memory banks for when the day comes that you may need it. The wave solder
fixture shown in the photo needed to provide a reliable and repeatable
method of soldering 3 individual PCB's together, while maintaining a fixed
inside distance of .482" +/- .006" between the two larger PCB's. These goals
were accomplished by creating the PCB pocket which located PCB 1. PCB 1 is
secured to the fixture using a slider-type hold-down. PCB 2 was also located
in a pocket at the correct height to accomodate the thickness of PCB 1, and
held in place by a CH-series hold-down on top of a tall component. Finally,
PCB 3 was located using four pins in tooling holes. The pins also supported
the PCB at the correct height, maintaining the .482" spacing requirement
with the added stability offered by 4 support pads. The PCB is secured to
the support pads on each corner using #1 holddowns. As if that wasn't
enough, all this was done 2-up on a rotary fixture!
It is not possible to show everything in this one picture, but if you have
internet access, you can check out some additional photos by clicking the
big picture link under the photo. Until next time, happy assembly!
