I've been trying to get a debug of this behavior for the last few days. Of
course the only time it happens is when I forget to start with -d lol.
Hopefully I will have something soon though.
We should really hang out on mumble some time. It's been way too long.

does it work then? Maybe the reason was the restructuring to react on keypress
instead of key release?

Sometimes, when switching back to the console from X, the alt and/or control
keys get stuck. This happens so often that I am in the habit of tapping those
keys to make sure they aren't stuck when I switch. I looked at the keyboard
stuff, but it is a bit on the complicated side, and I'm not sure how to go
about fixing this.
