This February Crossing Cultures Travel and Tours is participating
in/hosting two presentations - on on urban gardening/farming and the other
on Ohio's historic sun down towns.
On Wednesday, February 20, the Local Food Council is hosting their
regular meeting at Flavor91, 5186 E. Main St., Whitehall where the focus of
the discussion is key elements for developing an African-American urban
gardener.
On Thursday, February 28, Crossing Cultures Travel and Tours is hosting
the discussion on towns in Ohio that legally, or by social practice,
excluded African-Americans from being residents within those communities at
the Driving Park Library Branch. This is of note for many now due to the
recent movie "Green Book" (title refers to the book that was used as a
guide to non-discriminatory hospitality establishments in the US) that
includes an example of what happens when this social prohibition is
violated.
Julialynne Walker is the presenter for both.
Please share this information with your communities as appropriate. Both
activities are free and open to the public.
Julialynne Walker has worked with community, public and private sector
organizations - domestic and international - managing projects and
providing strategic planning and guidance in the areas of social
development, change management (gender, diversity and inclusion), public
policy and the African Diaspora. She has extensive experience in working
with under-resourced communities and individuals both in the United States
and abroad. A keen interest has been in the area of sustainable food
resources or community gardening/farming, in both rural and urban areas.
Over the last five years she has developed a food source for Bethany
Presbyterian Church’s Community Lunch program, which feeds 90 to 200 people
on average every Saturday that led to an urban farm stand for 13 weeks in a
food desert..
She is a devoted social historian and focuses especially on the African
Diaspora. Her Facebook page and LinkedIn group, Crossing Cultures
provide online sources of information and dialogue. She is currently
engaged in developing group tours to West and East Africa to explore local
sustainable agricultural projects. Recent research work appears in:

Her local community activities include serving on the boards of the
Columbus Landmarks Foundation and Columbus Africentric Early College as
well as the advisory committees for the Columbus African-American Digital

Connections. She also is a member of the Greater Columbus Gardening
Coalition.
Her BA is from the College of Wooster (Ohio) and her JD is from
Northwestern University (Illinois)
