Hello FCLFC,
This past October, a flash mob gathered outside Aramark’s headquarters, in
Philadelphia, to deliver a petition with 100,000 signatures. There were
urging the food distributor, who made $14.6 billion last year, to start
putting support towards Real Meals Campaign, rather than agribusiness giants.
The flash mob gathered and shut down a portion of Market Street. Black,
indigenous, and people of color danced to represent the most marginalized
groups in food system decision-making, forming sacred and ancestral symbols
of nature, continuity, and the cycle of life. Real Meals Campaign believes
that big food corporations have business models that drive farmers off their
lands, continue racial injustice, drive down wages, and increase disease and
carbon emissions. Therefore, Real Meals Campaign calls out the
multi-billion-dollar cafeteria industry to be a leader in changing our food
system. Big players are Aramark, Sodexo, and Compass Group, who make deals
exclusively with big food manufacturers, instead of farmers of color, fair
and humane food sources, and community farmers. Real Meals Campaign believes
that, “united, we can build a food system grounded in racial justice,
fairness, and dignity for us and future generations”.
Real Meals Campaign’s Goals:
· Have 25% of "real food" for every campus
· Invest in racial justice and equity
· Reduce carbon emissions and industrial animal produces
· Increase accountability and transparency
“Petition signers are calling on Aramark to:
· Purchase at least 25% of food from sources that are local &
community based, fair, ecologically sound, and humane;
· Invest $1 million in infrastructure for – and increase purchasing
from – farmers and fishers of color;
· Reduce carbon emissions and factory-farmed meat, poultry, and
cheese purchases by 25%;
· Cut out the kickbacks that lock in big food manufacturers and lock
out everyone else; and
· Create and maintain transparency and accountability to these goals.”
