Regarding battery life, I read somewhere that it's good practice to
never let it fall below 30% or to charge it over 80%. The battery
doesn't like the terrifying lows or the dizzying highs.
Apps that use push notifications are another big drain. Make sure
offenders such as Facebook and Twitter are not allowed to use
background app refresh. Better yet, kill them from the App Switcher
when not in use.
Turn off Bluetooth unless you really need it. And just say no to
Raise to Wake and Hey Siri. Raise to Wake is just annoying. I had my
iPhone in my pocket and VoiceOver announced the time every time I
stood up. And I find the idea of Siri listening to my every word
downright creepy.
I set Brightness to 0% as well as keeping the Screen Curtain on. Not
applicable to those with some useful vision, of course! ;)
And do you really need Location Services on all the time? I don't
know about you, but I know my regular routes very well. Location
Services eats into your data as well as your battery. My advice is to
keep it in reserve for emergencies or if you find yourself in
unfamiliar territory.
Lastly, go to Settings > WiFi and make sure Ask to Join Networks is
on. Otherwise, your iPhone will be constantly scanning for any
available WiFi networks.

PS: Save wear and tear on the Home button by using Assistive Touch instead.
