Hi All
Thanks to the forty hardy souls who braved the elements to attend what was a
momentous occasion in the League last night. In a lively debate which lasted
over an hour, a turn out of around 70% of the League's members discussed the
pros and cons of the future of the League.
The topic for debate was the proposal to merge the League with Fighting
Blindness and the attendees participated with great gusto.
The general feeling of the meeting was very positive towards the proposed
merger with the following points being enforced time and again throughout
the meeting:
Continuity of League activities - swimming, yoga, walks, entertainment,
parties, table quizzes, bar licence, etc to be continued in the new
arrangement;
Retention of the building - the building to remain in the control of blind
and vision impaired members as long as necessary; a two-thirds majority
decision required to dispense of it.
Access to the premises - members to retain access to the building as at
present for gathering prior to swimming as well as members using toilet and
dog run facilities.
Trust - respect the trust of Fighting Blindness to honour their word and
carry out their promise to the League
Representation - League to be represented on the new Board as well as such
sub-committees as social, financial, advocacy and support.
Prior to closing the meeting the chairman called for a show of hands of
those in favour of proceeding with the merger talks; 35were in favour, none
against and 5 abstained.
So the Board are now empowered to proceed with the talks and the Chairman
told the meeting that it was hoped to have another general meeting in May at
which representatives from Fighting Blindness would be present to answer any
questions our members wish to raise.
