Morning Ann.
The meetings are held at Cork City Library, grand Parade Cork, on Saturdays
from 12:00 noon - 1:00pm. The meeting room is situated on the ground floor,
at the rear right hand side of the main library, opposite the music library
room.
Please note that meeting times will change as and from Saturday September
3rd, to the earlier time of 11:00am - 12:30pm. There are no meetings on the
second Saturday of every month, as the date clashes with the Cork Vision
Impaired Walking Group monthly walk. Also, the library closes on Public
Holiday Weekends, for example: Saturday July 30th (August Bank Holiday
Weekend), and Saturday October 29th (October Bank Holiday Weekend).

Meeting Saturday July 23rd, Cork City Library
In Attendance:
Derry Walsh, Colette O'Regan, Ken Walsh, Pat Walsh, Pat McCarthy, Geraldine
Looney, Cearbhall O Meadhra (Facetime from Dublin), Paul Dromey
Derry informed the meeting that he has booked the room in Cork City library
right up to Saturday December 17th this year. The meeting times will change
as and from Saturday September 3rd; from the current 12:00 - 1:30pm to the
earlier time of 11:00am - 12:30pm.
The bookings exclude the second Saturday of every month, as it clashes with
the walking group. Also, the library always closes for Bank Holiday
Weekends, so there will be no meeting on Saturday next July 30th, or on
October 29th, the Saturday of the October Bank Holiday Weekend.
Colette had a problem with her iPhone constantly giving a "Connect to the
Internet" message. Ken helped her to solve the issue.
Pat McCarthy mentioned that he found it problematic to go backwards when
reading iBooks. He also said that he couldn't find the going forward button
in the library Borrow Box app. He said that he had initially found it but
failed to do so again. It was agreed that Borrow Box is a superior and more
accessible app than its predecessor Overdrive. It was, however, that the
supply of available books in the Library under the Borrow Box system was
limited.
Pat Walsh has recently downloaded the KNFB Reader and had some questions.
This led to a productive discussion during which Cearbhall outlined the
stteps, with particular emphasis on the Field of View Report function. He
recommended using the two finger split tap when photographing a document;
and also mentioned two similar portable stands, Fopydo and Giraffe, which
can be used to ensure that the camera is the optimum distance and angle from
the document to be read. These can be purchased online and some members
will recall that Cearbhall brought his own Fopydo to an early meeting of the
club.
There was a brief follow-on from last week's Powerpoint discussion, which
led on to Cearbhall explaining about unblocking a function in Outlook, or
other similar Microsoft programs, which block Attachment which may or may
not be infected and appear in Protection Mode. This can be effected through
Access Options/Trust Centre/attachments, and tick allow attachments to be
opened and edited. Even when such attachments are saved to hard disk, they
are still protected and blocked. Solution: go to Properties in the
filefolder and tab to the Blocked button anb unblock it.
Both Geraldine and Paul have both taken advantage of the recent Sight &
Sound JAWS offer and were preparing to download the Windows 10 operating
system. Cearbhall said that this should prove to be fairly smooth, but
seemed to remember that sighted assistance might be required at some point
during the download. He recommended installing the new operating system
prior to installation of the new JAWS upgrade.
Colette asked about updating the Whatsapp program, which led on to a general
discussion about updating apps in general. She also wanted to know how she
can regularly check her phone data usage etc. Pat McCarthy suggested going
into Settings/Cellular, where she could set a date close to her billing time
and store the details that way, resetting for each billing period. On some
IOS versions, this can be found under Settings/Mobile. Pat also took the
meeting through the various other options under Cellular.
Saving phone data usage recommendations were discussed; including stopping
unwanted messages etc trying to come through in Facebook, and Notification
Centre, also the importance of using the app switcher to close apps on a
constant basis because running apps use up data. Cearbhall shared an
anecdote about an earlier 4/S iPhone on which he was getting about 2 hours
of battery life a day, all because he had various apps turned on in
Notification Centre. The advice: go to Notification Centre and turn off any
apps you don't really need there.
There was some discussion about Spotify, and Pat McCarthy mentioned the free
trial option, pointing out that any downloaded songs would automatically be
deleted at the end of the trial period. He also returned to the previous
week's Apple Music free trial subject with further suggestions about making
the most of the app. period.
Pat McCarthy mentioned that refurbished Itouchs, iPads, and laptops can be
purchased using the Apple Store app. Perhaps a useful tip for buying for
younger people or replacing items!
Geraldine asked about the contents of the desktop appearing at an angle.
Cearbhall explained that the right alt key, in conjunction with the arrow
keys can be used for rotation purposes, provided that they are not being
used by another program at the time.
Pat McCarthy gave an update on the current state of a court case being taken
against the State by Robbie Sinnot to allow vision impaired users to vote
with total independence in elections, particularly given the Irish
proportional representation voting system.
