Subject: [fb-exchange] FB Exchange Cork minutes 16th of February 2019
In attendance,
Derry Walsh, Ken Walsh, Pat Walsh, Pat McCarthy On WhatsApp: Martha Parkinson,
Jackie McBrierty, Noreen Meagher,
Facetime: Joan Ann Brosnan,
Landline: Cearbhall O'Meadhra
Apologies, Chris Egan who tried to join late but was not noticed until the
meeting was over. The what’s app participants came in on Ken’s Iphone and
Joan Ann came in on FaceTime on Pat Mc Carthys iPhone.
Pat Walsh pointed out that electric ireland is offering free electronic
controls for new clients this week.
using Hive for controlling their electric heating.
There is a 14 day cooling off period.
Jackie found the Hive app difficult to use and was only able to work the on and
off functions as the rest was inaccessible.
Derry wanted to know did anyone use Lexi. Jackie and Martha are using Lexi
They use the app when not in the house.
Jackie recommended paying the €9.99 per month if using Music library for
Amazon and spotify.
Noreen reported that it is more and more difficult to find a cooker that has
buttons and dials rather than a featureless touch screen.
Most kitchen appliances seem to be going the same way as if there were no low
vision users in the kitchen. This Led to an impassioned discussion of cooking
techniques and accidents.
Joan Ann raised the issue of the NCBI survey which she tried to use with the
recommended JAWS and Chrome. She found it impossible to complete the survey
because the checkboxes were invisible at one of the screens.
Jackie and Ken reported problems completing the survey using VoiceOver.
Cearbhall reported success with NVDA Firefox and tabbing around to every part
of the survey.
Pat McCarthy reported that the iPhone could be used in low power mode all the
time to preserve the life of the battery.
He noted that the charger plug for the iPhone is always working, even when not
plugged in to the iphone because the converter in the plug is still active and
recommended that the power switch be turned off on the socket. He also advised
to be careful not to leave phones charging unobserved due to the risk of fires.
Ken reported that certain journal and liberal entries in Facebook were not
working with VoiceOver.
Ken reported if two people share the same post on Facebook. it was possible to
flick down to more and tap on more to get in and read the entry. Martha and
Jackie shared the same experience.
Ken discovered that he could flick three fingers right to close Facebook videos
that would not close in the normal way.
Pat Walsh received massive support from the entire group to download, install
and set up WhatsApp.
cearbhall is to add Joan Ann and Pat Walsh to the WhatsApp group.
Thanks to everyone that got involved In today’s meeting.
A big thanks to Cearbhall for taking today’s minutes for me.
The next Cork meeting is on 23rd of February at 11am.
All the best
Ken
