The meeting welcomed both first time attendees Veronica Coffey and Tom
O'Rourke.
Declan demonstrated the Kindle Fire and the Kindle 3 both book readers and
both are accessible devices for totally blind people having spoken output.
The Kindle Fire can also support Netflix and Spotify access. Both devices
can provide a means of storing documents and reading them back but the
Kindle 3 has limited memory. Also, Declan informed us that the screen on the
Kindle 3 is very fragile.
Both devices have wifi as well as kindle audio adapter, which is a USB
dongle that will allow you to hook up a headset or external speakers to your
kindle.
You can transfer your personal documents, as well
as
Audible
content and MP3 music to your device directly from your computer.
Tom O'Rourke required assistance with reading some audio books he had
downloaded using the iBooks app. Mary helped out with this by showing him
using Siri to open the Books app and then swipe to the library tab and then
open the book in question by double-tapping it. She and Bert helped with
showing him how to move page by page along his iphone using a three-finger
swipe from left to right while on the page portion of the screen.
Declan showed Veronica how to activate TalkBack on her SamSung android
phone. You open the Accessibility icon and swipe down to TalkBack and
activate it.
Cearbhal and Mary talked about using the app switcher feature on the iphone
which both Tom and Gerry wanted to know about. By pressing the home button
quickly twice in succession the app switcher feature is enabled. This allows
a user to control the apps that are open on your phone.
Gerry asked about what apps we would recommend for a person with sight loss
and Bert suggested the RealTime app for trains and buses as well as Simple
Radio.
