Most people across the country woke up on Monday morning to a deluge of rain
and cold easterly winds which have kept temperatures well below average for the
middle of April.
An orange weather alert for rain, the second highest, remains in place across
the counties of Cork and Waterford with a yellow weather alert in place for the
every county in the Republic except the counties of Cavan, Longford, Monaghan,
Louth, Westmeath and Meath.
Cork has borne the brunt of torrential rain. Some 34.8mms of rain have fallen
in the last 12 hours at Roches Point south of Cork city with 20mms prior to
that on Sunday and a further 20mms to come by Monday evening.
The good news, though, is that it is unlikely to cause flooding as river levels
are low at present because of a dry spring.
Once the rain clears away on Monday night, it will make way for glorious spring
weather culminating in temperatures of 21 degrees on Good Friday and Easter
Saturday.
It will start to improve on Wednesday with temperatures of 15 to 16 degrees
across the midlands and Thursday will be even warmer with temperatures of 17 to
18 degrees.
The best days of the Easter weekend will be Friday and Saturday with the
possibility of 21 degrees on both days in the west of Ireland. It will be
slightly cooler in the east because of easterly winds.
Easter Sunday will also be a pleasant days with temperatures of around 18 to 19
degrees. It looks like rain will be in the air for Easter Monday.
âFrom Tuesday it is improving,â said Met Ãireann forecaster Liz Gavin.
âAs we go through Wednesday we are becoming mostly dry with the sun coming
out. It will slowly heat up. The dry settled weather will persist until at
least Easter Sunday.
âIt looks like cooler weather after the Easter weekend. Unfortunately, the
good weather is not going to last until June, but there is a lot of uncertainty
about the weather next week.â
