Apple Releases iOS 13.2 & iPadOS 13.2; Bringing Many Bug Fixes for Blind &
Low Vision Users

On Monday  28th October Apple released iOS 13.2 and iPadOS 13.2 to the
public. In addition to bringing some new features - including some
originally slated for the initial iOS 13 release - these releases bring
fixes for a large number of the bugs that iOS 13.0
<https://www.applevis.com/blog/accessibility-bugs-introduced-and-resolved-io
s-13-blind-and-low-vision-users>  and iOS 13.1 and iPadOS 13.1
<https://www.applevis.com/blog/apple-releases-ios-131-and-ipados-131-bringin

low vision users.

One Change of Note

In iOS 13.2 and iPadOS 13.2, Apple has made one change that may initially
have you believe that something is broken.

The Context menu item has been removed from the VoiceOver rotor's Actions
menu and replaced with a new gesture: a one-finger triple- tap. Our
assumption is that this change has been made to address the problem where
this item would be present in the Actions menu when on UI elements which
didn't actually have a Context Menu. Regrettably, this change does make it
harder to discover which UI elements do have Context menus - one must use a
mix of experience, educated guesswork, and trial and error.

If you would prefer to have a different gesture to access the Context menu,
you can change it by going to Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver >
Commands > Touch Gestures.

Bug Fixes for Blind and Low Vision Users

Our testing suggests that the following pre-existing accessibility bugs have
been resolved in iOS 13.2 and iPadOS 13.2:

*         VoiceOver no longer on occasions becomes unresponsive after ending
a phone call or a voice chat in some messaging apps.
nding-call-phone-or-facetime-apps>

*         It is now possible to use the Indian Siri voices as the VoiceOver
voice.

*         If you have a Shortcut that prompts you to select from a menu,
VoiceOver now consistently speaks all menu options.
eover>

*         It is now possible to access the Status Bar with the VoiceOver
keyboard shortcut.

t-fields-show-context-menu-which-does-nothing>

*         When viewing a message in the Mail app, VoiceOver now speaks the
badge on the Back button which indicates the number of unread messages in
the same folder.

*         The selection status of the Dark/Light Mode toggle in the Control
Centre is now accurately indicated to VoiceOver users.

*         VoiceOver now speaks text pasted in to the message field in the
Messages app.

*         VoiceOver users can now access websites listed under “Siri

New Bugs for VoiceOver and Braille Users in iOS 13.2 and iPadOS 13.2

Disappointingly, our testing suggests that iOS 13.2 and iPadOS 13.2 also
introduce some new bugs for VoiceOver and braille users:

*         There are numerous places system-wide where the Misspelled Words
item will be in the VoiceOver rotor's Action menu where this functionality
is not available (examples include when viewing a web page in Safari and
when reading an email in Mail). In some of these it is the default position
of the VoiceOver rotor, which is a frustrating hit on the user experience -
for example when opening a webpage in Safari and expecting to be able to
immediately flick down to navigate by heading.

*         When editing text that contains line breaks using a braille
display, the cursor which is represented by dots 7 and 8 will often
disappear after a cursor routing button is pressed.

*         After one app has opened another (for example when double-tapping
on a link in an email opens Safari), you may find that it is not possible to
locate the Status Bar by touch. Our experience suggests that this is a
device-specific issue, and most devices are not affected.

*         Previously, the Misspelled Words item was not available from the
VoiceOver rotor's Action menu in Safari text fields. It is now present, but
does not work. It also does not appear to work consistently when composing
emails in the Mail app.

As we always stress, we can make no claims on the completeness or accuracy
of our testing. We are only a small team, and it is simply impossible for us
to test all devices, configurations, applications, and use cases.

General Changes in iOS 13.2

New Emoji

iOS 13.2 and iPadOS 13.2 introduce 59 new emoji characters. According to
MacRumors
<https://www.macrumors.com/2019/10/10/ios-13-2-beta-2-brings-new-emojis/> ,
these include:

Orangutan, sloth, otter, skunk, and flamingo are the new animals included in
the update, while new food items include garlic, onion, waffle, falafel,
butter, oyster, beverage box, maté, and ice cube.

New faces, gestures, and poses include yawning face, pinching hand, person
kneeling, person standing, and new people holding hands options that are
both gender and skin tone inclusive.

Also new are the 13 disability-themed emoji proposed by Apple last year
<https://www.applevis.com/blog/apple-proposes-new-accessibility-emojis-inclu
ding-guide-dog-hearing-aid-and-people-using-white> . These include a guide
dog, woman with white cane, man with white cane, and ear with hearing aid.

When using a multi-person emoji, there's a new skin tone picker that lets
you select a different skin tone for each person. Our experience is that
this works well with VoiceOver.

Announce Messages with Siri

You can now have Siri read out messages without having to unlock your iPhone
when second-generation AirPods and H1-equipped Beats headphones are
connected. Siri will avoid interrupting you and will listen after reading
messages so you can reply without saying “Hey Siri”.

This can be turned on by going to Settings > Siri & Search and toggling on
Announce Messages.

Other Changes

*         After upgrading to iOS 13.2 and iPadOS 13.2 there will be a splash
screen that allows you to opt out of sharing Siri and Dictation audio
recordings with Apple. This can also be set in the iOS privacy settings.

*         There is a new option in the Siri & Search settings that allows
iPhone and iPad users to delete their Siri and Dictation history from
Apple's servers.

*         iOS 13.2 adds Deep Fusion support to the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11
Pro.

*         When using Haptic Touch or 3D Touch on a Home screen icon, the
resulting menu now includes an option to delete the app.

How to update

iOS 13.2 and iPadOS 13.2 are available via Over-the-Air Update (Settings >
General > Software Update) via Finder on a Mac with macOS Catalina, or via
iTunes on a PC or Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier.

Before updating, we strongly recommend making a full and complete backup of
your device (either locally or in iCloud, depending on personal preference).
This will ensure that, in the unlikely event that something goes wrong
during the update process, you will have a current backup on hand in case a
device restore becomes necessary. Also, if using OTA update, we recommend
plugging your device into a power source for the duration of the
download/installation process, so as to prevent the unlikely event of your
battery going dead during the update.

Apple Releases macOS 10.15.1 & watchOS 6.1 with Apple Watch Series 1 &
Series 2 Support

Apple yesterday released macOS 10.15.1 and watchOS 6.1.

According to the release notes via 9to5Mac
<https://9to5mac.com/2019/10/29/watchos-6-1-series-1-series-2-more/> ,
watchOS 6.1 includes the following changes:

watchOS 6.1 introduces support for AirPods Pro and includes improvements and
bug fixes. This update also brings watchOS 6 to Apple Watch Series 1 and
Series 2.

The macOS Catalina 10.15.1 update includes updated and additional emoji,
support for AirPods Pro, HomeKit Secure Video, HomeKit enabled routers, and
new Siri privacy settings, as well as bug fixes and improvements.

The full release notes are:

*         Over 70 new or updated emoji, including animals, food, activities,
new accessibility emoji, gender neutral emoji, and skin tones selection for
couple emoji

*         Introduces support for AirPods Pro

*         HomeKit Secure Video enables you to privately capture, store, and
view encrypted video from your security cameras and features people, animal,
and vehicle detection

*         HomeKit enabled routers let you control how your HomeKit
accessories communicate over the internet or in your home

*         Adds support for AirPlay 2-enabled speakers in scenes and
automations

*         Privacy settings to control whether or not to help improve Siri
and Dictation by allowing Apple to store audio of your Siri and Dictation
interactions

*         Option to delete your Siri and Dictation history from Siri
Settings

Our testing of macOS 10.15.1 suggests that Siri voices are more responsive
when using them as the VoiceOver voice. In macOS 10.15, there appeared to be
significant delays when using these voices, sometimes resulting in skipped
or repeated speech and unreliable VoiceOver feedback.

In addition, it is now reportedly possible
<https://www.applevis.com/blog/if-catalyst-apps-are-future-mac-software-futu
re-currently-doesnt-look-too-bright-voiceover>  to access preferences
windows for Mac Catalyst apps with VoiceOver.

Similar to the above fix in macOS 10.15.1, one possible improvement we found
during our testing of watchOS 6.1 is that the option to use the Siri voice
as the VoiceOver voice on the Series 4 or 5 Apple Watch is a little more
reliable.

On watchOS 6.0 our experience was that VoiceOver would typically revert back
spontaneously and very quickly to using its own voice, and that it would
then prove extremely unlikely that you would be able to restore the watch
back to using the Siri voice.

However, things appear to be slightly improved on watchOS 6.1, where our
experience has been that VoiceOver is less likely to spontaneously revert
back to using its own voice.

Unfortunately, the behavior becomes less reliable if you change the voice
used by Siri. You may find that VoiceOver will mirror the change for the
first one or two times that you change the Siri voice, but it's likely that
after this it will revert back to using its own voice; at which point it
seemingly becomes impossible to restore it to using a Siri voice.

Our recommendation for now, is that if you do manage to get VoiceOver to use
a Siri voice, don't then change the voice used by Siri unless you need to.
Our other recommendation is that you keep emailing Apple's Accessibility
Team at

accessibility@xxxxxxxxx <mailto:accessibility@xxxxxxxxx>

asking that they resolve this issue.

How to update

macOS 10.15.1 can be downloaded by going to System Preferences > Software
Update.

watchOS 6.1 is available by going to the Watch app on your iPhone and
navigating to General> Software Update. To install the update, your Watch
must be connected to its charger and have at least 50% battery power.

Apple Releases tvOS 13.2 & a Software Update for HomePod that brings
Multi-User Support

Alongside of the releases of iOS 13.2 and iPadOS 13.2
<https://www.applevis.com/blog/apple-releases-ios-132-and-ipados-132-bringin
g-many-bug-fixes-blind-and-low-vision-users> , Apple has also released tvOS
13.2 and a software update for HomePod that adds multi-user support.

Apple traditionally does not provide release notes for tvOS updates, so it
is unknown if tvOS 13.2 brings any notable changes. However, AppleInsider
<https://appleinsider.com/articles/19/10/28/apple-releases-tvos-132-for-appl
e-tv-with-siri-recording-opt-in>  reports that it adds support for Siri
recording opt-in and the new AirPods Pro:
-active-noise-cancellation-and-transparency-mode>

After installing the update on the Apple TV, a new intro screen appears that
explains how Apple will use the Siri recordings and allows users to decide
whether or not they'd like to aid Apple in improving Siri's abilities by
sharing occasional bits of their Siri conversations.

To install tvOS 13.2 on Apple TV 4K or Apple TV (4th generation), go to
Settings > System > Software Updates and Select Update Software. If there's
an update, select Download and Install. Wait for your Apple TV to download
the update. Don't disconnect or unplug your Apple TV until the update
completes.

The New Software for HomePod will enable HomePod to distinguish between
different voices for the first time. It also brings support for Handoff and
a new Ambient Sounds feature.

The full release notes via MacRumors
<https://www.macrumors.com/2019/10/28/apple-releases-new-ios-13-2-homepod-so
ftware/>  lists the following changes for the new HomePod software

*         The ability for HomePod to recognize the voices of different
family members to provide a personalized experience

*         Handoff music, podcasts, or phone calls by bringing your iPhone
close to HomePod

*         Add music to your HomeKit scenes

*         Play relaxing high-quality soundtracks with Ambient Sounds

*         Set sleep timers to fall asleep to music or Ambient Sounds

The new HomePod software will be installed automatically on the HomePod
after you update to iOS 13.2, but you can also manually update and check
your software version by following the instructions on this Apple support
page <https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT208247
