Apple Releases iOS 12.1.1 With Bug Fixes & Minor Enhancements

In addition to reintroducing one feature and making some enhancements, iOS
12.1 also brings a few improvements for blind & low vision users.

Accessibility Improvements in iOS 12.1.1

In iOS 12.1.1, Apple has made continued progress towards addressing the
accessibility bugs in iOS 12 <https://www.applevis.com/bugs/ios/active> .
Based on our testing, we believe the following issues have been resolved in
iOS 12.1.1:

*         VoiceOver no longer speaks extraneous text on the Recents tab of
the Phone app (on iOS 12.1 VoiceOver would speak something in the form of
"David user_label_primary" rather than "David Mobile").

*         There are no longer duplicated items on the VoiceOver Actions
Rotor in the native Notes app.

At the time of posting, we are unaware of any new bugs or regressions for
blind or low vision users in iOS 12.1.1. However, as we always stress, it is
impossible for us to test all devices; configurations; and use cases-so
there may be improvements or regressions that we did not identify during the
beta cycle.

General Changes in iOS 12.1.1

According to Macrumors
<https://www.macrumors.com/2018/11/15/apple-seeds-ios-12-1-1-beta-3-to-devel
opers/> , iOS 12.1.1 reintroduces the feature that lets you take a Live
Photo while on a FaceTime call and makes a few minor interface and user
experience enhancements:

Following the update, FaceTime features a reworked bottom bar that includes
quick access buttons for muting a call and flipping the camera. Sliding up
on the bottom bar brings up additional options with conversation
participants. Previously, FaceTime users were required to tap on three dots
to access a secondary menu with these features.

For the iPhone XR, iOS 12.1.1 allows Haptic Touch to be used to expand
notifications on the Lock screen. iPhone XR owners are able to long press on
a notification banner to see additional content, much as other iPhone owners
can 3D Touch on a notification to expand it.

iOS 12.1.1 also adds a new option in Apple News to hide the side bar on the
iPad when using the app in landscape mode, it introduces an option to turn
off the physical SIM in the device in favor of the eSIM, and it tweaks the
icon of the Apple Watch app so it looks like the Apple Watch Series 4.

The complete release notes via MacRumors
<https://www.macrumors.com/2018/12/05/ios-12-1-1-released/>  are as follows:

How to Update to iOS 12.1.1

iOS 12.1.1 is available via Over-the-Air Update (Settings > General >
Software Update) or via iTunes on a Mac or PC.

Before updating, we strongly recommend making a full and complete backup of
your device (either in iTunes or iCloud, depending on personal preference).
This will ensure that, in the unlikely event that something goes wrong
during the update process, you will have a current backup on hand in case a
device restore becomes necessary. Also, if using OTA update, we recommend
plugging your device into a power source for the duration of the
download/installation process, so as to prevent the unlikely event of your
battery going dead during the update.

More information on how to update the software on your iOS device is
available on this Apple Support page
<https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204204> .

Apple Releases macOS Mojave 10.14.2, tvOS 12.1.1, HomePod 12.1.1 & an Update
to the Shortcuts App

According to MacRumors
<https://www.macrumors.com/2018/11/15/apple-seeds-macos-mojave-10-14-2-beta-
3/> , no new features were found in the beta cycle of macOS 10.14.2,
suggesting that this release is likely to focus on bug fixes and
under-the-hood improvements.

The complete release notes for macOS 10.14.2 via MacRumors
<https://www.macrumors.com/2018/12/05/macos-10-14-2-released/>  are as
follows:

*         Adds RTT (real-time text) support for Wi-Fi calling.

*         Adds a menu item to News for opening a story in Safari.

*         Resolves an issue that may prevent iTunes from playing media to
third-party AirPlay speakers.

Enterprise-related:

*         Allows administrators to enable FileVault via MDM for mobile
accounts and users created by MDM.

*         Allows users to reset their login password at the login window
when that password has expired via a password policy.

*         Resolves an issue that prevents displays from working when
connected to MacBook Pro models introduced in 2018, if certain third-party
USB graphics devices are also connected.

Apple does not traditionally provide release notes for tvOS, so it's still
unknown what improvements or fixes are included with tvOS 12.1.1. However,
it's likely to focus on under-the-hood performance improvements and bugs
that have been discovered since the release of tvOS 12.

Apple has also released HomePod 12.1.1 and Shortcuts 2.1.2. According to
MacRumors
<https://www.macrumors.com/2018/12/05/homepod-12-1-1-and-shortcuts-2-1-2/> ,
the HomePod update is a relatively minor one, whilst the Shortcuts update
"features a new "Post to Tumblr" action, iCloud sync improvements,
localization improvements, and a long list of bug fixes":

*         Fixed an issue where the screen describing which apps and services
are used by a shortcut may not appear when downloading a shortcut

*         Fixed an issue that caused shortcuts with the Open App or Play
Sound actions to fail when Siri is used to run the shortcuts

*         Fixed an issue where shortcuts with Repeat with Each actions may
freeze when they're run from the widget or Library tab

*         Fixed an issue where the Phone Number action may not understand
phone numbers that contain commas (pauses) or have long extension codes

*         Fixed an issue where the Show Directions action may not work when
it's run from the Shortcuts Today View widget on the Lock screen

*         Fixed an issue where the Add New Reminder action doesn't work when
a time or location isn't entered

*         Fixed an issue where the Send Payment action may not appear to
finish when making Apple Pay Cash payments

*         Fixed an issue where the Ask for Input action's default answer
field for dates wouldn't support 24-hour time

*         Fixed an issue where the Get Name of Emoji action showed the emoji
name in English when the device is set to another language

*         Fixed an issue where some shortcuts may show an error message when
they're run from Search

*         Fixed an issue where shortcuts may fail to download web pages with
long Unicode titles

*         Fixed an issue where the Run Editorial Workflow action doesn't
pass a result

At the time of writing, the only change for blind and low-vision users we
are aware of is a fix for the, "Time of day," script in keyboard commander.

How to Update

macOS Mojave introduced a new method of installing software updates - you
now open System Preferences and select the "Software Update" option.

To install tvOS 12.1.1, go to the Settings channel then look for the System
section near the bottom. From here, look for Software Updates under
Maintenance, then select Update Software and Download and Install.

The new HomePod software will be installed automatically on the HomePod upon
updating to iOS 12.1.1 on a paired iPhone.

Apple Releases watchOS 5.1.2; With New ECG App and Irregular Heart Rate
Notifications for Apple Watch Users in the United States

Announcing the release of watchOS 5.1.2, apple
<https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2018/12/ecg-app-and-irregular-heart-rhythm-n
otification-available-today-on-apple-watch/>  said "the ECG app and
irregular heart rhythm notification feature will help users identify signs
of AFib, the most common form of irregular rhythm."

The ECG app on Apple Watch Series 4 marks the first direct-to-consumer
product that enables customers to take an electrocardiogram right from their
wrist, capturing heart rhythm in a moment when they experience symptoms like
a rapid or skipped heart beat and helping to provide critical data to
physicians. The irregular rhythm notification feature on Apple Watch can now
also occasionally check heart rhythms in the background and send a
notification if an irregular heart rhythm that appears to be atrial
fibrillation (AFib) is identified.

As previously reported in our review of Apple Watch Series 4
<https://www.applevis.com/blog/apple-watch-opinion-reviews/apple-watch-serie
s-4-review-more-screen-and-power-should-make-apple> , the new ECG app takes
advantage of the electrodes built into the Digital Crown and new electrical
heart rate sensor in the back crystal of the Apple Watch Series 4. To take a
reading you simply touch the Digital Crown and after 30 seconds, receive a
heart rhythm classification. All recordings, their associated
classifications and any noted symptoms are stored in the Health app in a PDF
that can be shared with physicians.

The irregular heart rate notifications will be available on Apple Watch
Series 1 through Series 4. As with the new ECG app, this feature will be
limited to users in the United States for now.

To enable these new heart features, you will be taken through an onscreen
setup flow that includes details about who can use these features, what the
features can and cannot do, what results you may get, how to interpret those
results and instructions for what to do if you are feeling symptoms that
require immediate medical attention.

Additionally, the watchOS 5.1.2 update introduces new complications for the
two Infograph watch faces on the Apple Watch Series 4. These new
complications include Mail, Messages, Home, Maps, Apple News, Find My
Friends, Phone, and Remote.

watchOS 5.1.2 also adds a new toggle to the Control Center for turning the
Walkie-Talkie feature on and off.

For VoiceOver users, Digital Crown feedback is no longer automatically
disabled if you have Digital Crown navigation enabled.

At the time of writing, we are unaware of any additional changes for blind
and low vision users in this release.

watchOS 5.1.2 is available by going to the Watch app on your iPhone and
navigating to General> Software Update. To install the update, your Watch
must be connected to its charger and have at least 50% battery power.
