Just bought your first iPhone? Awesome! Welcome to the world of iOS - the
mobile operating system that runs all these iPhones, iPads and iPod Touchs.
Apple toots it as the world's best iOS (I'll be the first to admit that it's
not true all the time) but for a first-time iPhone user, it's one of the
best iOS out there.

There's absolutely no learning curve here. All you have to do is explore and
the iPhone+iOS is designed to let you do this wonderfully.

The iPhone's interface comes with a lot of fine touches to the inner
workings. This makes it easy to access information, control stuff and get
things done on the iPhone in ways you'd not imagine. And mind you, all of
these are designed to make life simpler. True to its words, the iPhone is
one of the best ways to experience a smartphone.

Ready to jump right in? Here we go.

Here's a list of the ten most-handy tips for first-time iPhone users: Part
one

Swipe a Notification To Open App Directly
You see those notifications (someone sent you a message, iMessage, Whatsapp
message, Facebook notif etc.) coming up on the Lockscreen right? When you
get a notification, you might usually slide the unlock screen to view the
notification. But you can actually slide the icon on the notification to
open the app directly.

Comes in handy especially when there are multiple notifications from
different apps and you want to open just one of them. Next time you've got a
notification or many, try this.

Double-press Home Button for Multi-tasking
One the iPhone (iOS), unlike the Android platform, you have
behind-the-screens multi-tasking. While on Android, you can always see the
list of apps running in the background from the menu, on iPhone, you've got
to double-press the Home Button to see which apps are running.

When you double-press the home button, the screen lifts a little and icons
are shown. These apps are running.(You can close them by tapping and holding
on the icons and then pressing the '-' on the icons).

To the Top of a Conversation (without Swiping to Scroll)
This is a cool thing actually. If you want to scroll to the top of any app
(Safari, Messages, Whatsapp, Twitter, Facebook etc.), all you do is tap on
the status bar when the app is open. Tap on the date on the status bar when
the app is open and the app's page will scroll right to the top instantly.

Beats having to swipe continuously, right?

So how do you jump between songs from the lockscreen? Simple.

Double-press the home button when on the lockscreen. The clock disappears
and out pops the play/pause, next/forward buttons. That slider beneath is
the volume.

Control Music/Pod

Listening to music or podcasts but you are really on some other application,
reading Facebook statuses or Twitter updates or viewing pictures on
Instagram. You can control the volume with the buttons but how do you
control the playback itself? What if you want to quickly jump to the next
song?

Again, double-press the home button and you're on the multi-task switcher.
Now, swipe the switcher area to the right and you're now on the page where
you have these music controls.

Swipe Weather in Notification Center
The weather widget in the Notification Center is cool but supposing you want
to check the weather for the next few days? You'd normally tap on it to open
the Weather app where the forecast is shown but it can be much simpler.

Just swipe-left on the widget and voila! The forecast is shown too!

To Create a Folder
For first-time iPhone users who've downloaded a lot of apps, organization
can be a little tricky. The key idea is to organize your apps into folders
so you can find them much more easily. But how to create folders?

Simply, tap and hold on the icons till they wiggle and then drag the icon
over another icon of the same category. Suppose you are dragging an Angry
Birds icon, you'd drag that over the Temple Run 2 icon and that'll change
the way the icon looks now. Leave the icon there and it creates a folder
which you can name as 'Games' or whatever.

Auto-Download of Apps, Music and Books

If you've got more than one iOS device, and you want them synced, you might
need to make sure that all the apps and games get downloaded automatically.
Let's say you've got an iPod Touch and an iPhone. What you download on the
iPod Touch should also be available on the iPhone. You can either use iTunes
sync, which is a long process, or just opt to have auto-downloads enabled.

To do this:

*         Go to Settings

*         Tap on iTunes & App Stores

*         Under Automatic Downloads, enable all the switches.

That's it. Anything downloaded on your iPod Touch will also get synced,
downloaded and installed on the iPhone.

iPhone's display switching between portrait and landscape modes can be quite
annoying when you're lying down and watching videos or chatting. You can fix
this by locking iPhone's orientation mode in portrait.

To do this, all you do is double-press the Home Button and swipe to the
right. There's a button on the left which you tap and bam! Portrait
orientation gets locked now.

Change Modes on Calculator
But just in case you don't have the orientation locked, you have to see this
neat trick. When you have the calculator app open, you have only a few basic
functions. What, say, if you wanted to do some sine/cosine stuff? Just tilt
your iPhone and that brings up more functions on the calculator.

Tips for First-time iPhone Users: Part Two

Using the iPhone can be great fun if you know a little more of the nifty
tips and tricks you can use on the iPhone.

For first-time users of the iPhone, it can be an entertaining experience
because the iOS ecosystem is vastly different from anything that you've ever
used. Even if you came from the Android platform, iOS is going to be hugely
different.

We covered a few tips in the first part of this series
<https://www.igeeksblog.com/handy-tips-for-first-time-iphone-users/> .
Obviously, there are many more interesting tips that will come in handy when
you are typing a message, using the camera, trying to add an event and more.

Try these iPhone tips:

1.      Undo Typing

Typed something but you want to erase the whole thing. Be it Messages, or
Whatsapp, or WeChat or any other messaging app (or even just a normal text
field), you can erase the whole thing in two ways: one, tap and hold the
backspace. Or, the easier way, just shake your iPhone. When you shake your
iPhone, a new dialog pops up with the 'Undo Typing' option to tap on.

Simpler way to erase everything you've typed right?

2. Mute Shutter Sound

Want to mute the shutter sound when you click pictures? Unfortunately, the
iPhone doesn't have an option to to mute the shutter sound specifically. But
there's a workaround: the mute switch on the side of your iPhone.

When you mute your iPhone, the shutter sound is muted too. Of course, this
isn't a perfect workaround but it's good enough because you can use the mute
switch only when you use the camera and turn it back on after you're done.

3. Add EmojiWe've covered adding emoji to your keypad already and it's a
cool feature for iPhone users. You can use emoji not just in Whatsapp but
almost everywhere else. To do this, add a new keyboard. Here's how:

*         Go to Settings -> General -> Keyboard -> Keyboards

*         Tap on Add New Keyboard.

*         Choose Emoji and you're done!

Now, when the keyboard pops up, tap the globe icon and the keyboard changes
to emoji. Tap it again and it cycles through the keyboards you have added.

4. Filter Missed Calls

A better way to have a look at just the missed calls.

The Phone app shows you the list of recent calls made, received and missed.
The missed calls are usually marked in red font so you can actually know
immediately which calls are missed calls. However, if you want a finer level
of sorting, there's a Missed button right on top. Tap that and you will see
just the missed calls.

5. Redial A Number

The iPhone's Phone app - you'll notice - doesn't have a specific redial
button. But Apple's smart so they've hard-coded the redial option into the
green 'Call' button.

To redial a number you just typed, double-tap the Call button.

6. Adding an Event in Calendar

While there are many ways to add an event to your Calendar in the iPhone,
the simplest way is hidden in the Calendar app itself. It's pretty simple.

Just tap and hold on the date that you want to add an event. Up pops an Add
Event screen; enter the details here and you're done!

7. Change Search Priorities in Spotlight

Spotlight is a brilliant feature for looking through and finding the app,
message, email, event, music or web reference you're looking for. Over the
years, Spotlight on iOS has become quite powerful. By pressing the home
button from the first-page of the springboard, you get to the spotlight
search.

The order of the search results displayed on spotlight search can be
configured to suit your purpose. For instance, on one of the iPhones we have
a ton of apps installed. We use the spotlight search mostly to find an app.
So we just re-organized the spotlight search priority so we see apps first
in the search results.

To do this:

*         Go to Settings -> General -> Spotlight Search

*         Sort/order the various lists. If you don't want a particular
category to show up ( say, contacts), just tap on it to disable it. (There
is no check-mark beside it)

How to use VoiceOver on iPhone & iPad

VoiceOver is an  <https://www.imore.com/accessibility-iphone-ipad>
Accessibility feature that makes the iPhone and iPad easier to operate for
the blind and sight impaired.

With VoiceOver, anyone with a visual impairment can have their iPhone or
iPad's screen read to them, including buttons, icons, links, and other
interface elements, and use gestures to navigate and select their options.

Because VoiceOver is included in Apple's UIKit framework for developers, any
app using default controls gets VoiceOver support built right in. Here's how
to activate and use it!

Now that VoiceOver is enabled, the gestures you regularly use on your iPhone
will change.

How to use VoiceOver

VoiceOver changes the gestures in iOS in order to make it easier for
visually impaired individuals to know what they're tapping on before they
actually select it. Here are some tips to using VoiceOver:

*         Single-tap anywhere on the screen and your iPhone or iPad will
speak aloud the item that you're tapping on.

*         Double-tap on an item to select it.

*         To scroll through a page, use three fingers. With VoiceOver off
you typically use only one finger to scroll, but in VoiceOver you'll need to
use three so that your iPhone or iPad doesn't misread a tap as a scroll.

*         Double-tap with three fingers to toggle speech commands on and off
from the Lock Screen.

*         A two-finger double-tap while performing an action will start or
stop that action. For example, if you're on a phone call, double-tapping the
screen with two fingers will end the call. If you're in the Camera app,
double-tap with two fingers to take a photo.

*         In VoiceOver options you can customize and fine tune options such
as whether or not you'd like the device to speak notifications.

For more tips and tricks regarding VoiceOver, we recommend using the
VoiceOver Practice option within the VoiceOver Settings menu.

This allows you to tap the screen as you'd like and the iPhone or iPad will
speak aloud what that action does system-wide. This will help you get
someone used to how VoiceOver works and what commands trigger what actions.

How to change speaking rate in VoiceOver

You can change how quickly the VoiceOver speaks to you, and for tons of fun,
slow it right down and it sounds drunk! This is easiest to adjust when
VoiceOver is turned off.

1.     Launch Settings from your Home screen.

2.     Tap General.

3.     Tap Accessibility.

e/2016/09/accessibility-ios10-enable-voiceover-screens-01.jpeg?itok=bQh3j6sh

4.     Tap VoiceOver.

5.     Tap and drag the slider under Speaking Rate to change the rate of
speech. The further right you go, the faster it speaks (I have no idea who
would be able to use it on 100%, but there you go).

How to enable Pitch Change in VoiceOver

Pitch Change makes VoiceOver speak at a higher pitch when reading the first
item in a group and in a lower pitch when reading the last item in a group.
It's kind of hard to distinguish, but if you need it, it's there!

1.     Launch Settings from your Home screen.

2.     Tap General.

3.     Tap Accessibility.

4.     Tap VoiceOver.

5.     Tap the switch next to Pitch Change to turn it on.

How to manage Verbosity in VoiceOver

Verbosity is how much information is read to you and for some folks, the
chatter can be too much. Under the Verbosity heading, you can control
whether or not VoiceOver reads you hints (double-tap this or
three-finger-swipe that) or tells you that there are emojis in text.

1.     Launch Settings from your Home screen.

2.     Tap General.

3.     Tap Accessibility.

4.     Tap VoiceOver.

speak aloud what that action does system-wide.

How to change the VoiceOver voice

How to change VoiceOver pronunciations

VoiceOver isn't perfect and it sometimes reads words out phonetically when
that doesn't make sense. Or, you might have a sibling with a name that's
hard to pronounce and VoiceOver just can't get it. You can change how
VoiceOver pronounces certain words or phrases. Here's how:

1.Launch Settings from your Home screen.

2.Tap General.

3.Tap Accessibility.
