Hi Phil, if you are interested.....an even longer list of cultivars here,
from the International Poplar Commission, part of FAO. Who knew!!

Of course the 2 cultivars with no details in the Irish research paper also
have no details in this list, you could guess that!

It has some useful info about parentage, yield, disease resistance etc,
although strangely enough, not much about palatability for elephants and
giraffes!

Hi folks, hope all is well with you all.

I've been asked to look at potential browse for elephants, giraffes, etc
as new supplies appear.

A firewood producer, growing coppiced willow, for chipping and reforming
into 'heatlogs' has the following cultivars growing.

Beagle - breeding includes viminalis and unknowns

Discovery - no description found

Endeavour - breeding includes schwerinii and viminalis and many unknowns

Nimrod - no description found, now outclassed by newer cvs

Parfitt - cultivar of x mollisima var hippophaefolia

Resolution - breeding includes viminalis and schwerinii, and cultivars
thereof.

Terra Nova - breeding includes miyabeana, triandra, and viminalis, and
unknowns

There is one cultivar with S purpurea in parentage, which I imagine would
be less palatable!

Stott - cultivar of x forbiana (purpurea x viminalis)

Only entries for any of the species mentioned above in zooplants.net

is for S viminalis, a very welcome browse, and of course purpurea not eaten
at all.....

Has anyone tried any of the incredibly vigorous (4m in one year) cultivars
as browse??
