Hi Rick, I also tried Pterocarya, and it worked for gorillas. Red Capped
Mangabeys went in a couple of years later....and I retired!
I went in recently and saw that the Pterocarya have all suffered broken top
branches - the trees are only 4m at most, or at least they were!
Planting to keep the mangabeys away might be the only way now.
I'd agree with Ton, the Ulex may be the best way to go!! We only ever
planted the double form of Ulex - no seeds to spread around! But normally
only available in small sizes. I'd even suggest getting some old branches
and tieing them onto the lower trunk to give immediate protection. Horrible
job for the staff though - do you have any students??

fraxinifolia* at one of the Beekse Bergen Western gorilla islands, in

gorillas seem nog interested in, especially the new growth. Now our
gorillas share their island with black crested mangabey *Lophocebus
aterrimus*. Past two seasons the trees did well but at the moment these
trees are hunted by the mangabeys. The trees are provided with some hotwire
fences which prevents the gorillas from getting on to them, which worked
for the mangabeys as well but the introduction of a new male and his
current offspring manage to pass it. For now we are planning on hotgrass as
an extra defense, but we are not entirely convinced this will be the
complete solution. Therefore I want to improve it also with some defensive
vegetation.

Currently there is also some goat willow * Salix caprea* and barberry
*Berberis
julianea* at the island which they seem to leave alone. Berberis in that
way could be the answer to my question , but I was wondering any of you
have some brilliant methods of providing protection to our trees. Two of
them are in worrisome state… Hopefully you can call me some proven
suggestions?
