Dear Dude,

While I appreciate your words of encouragement and advice, this is not a useful answer.  I have half a dozen thick books on AD in my library, including the official "Microsoft" books.  I have spent much time in Barnes and Nobles etc. browsing additional books.  I have read every section in each book that I have, that might have shed light on this subject.  And needless to say, I have googled till my finers are blue.

In general, I have a pretty decent understanding of AD, and have been working with AD etc. for some years.  No one is an expert on all things, and I was seeking help on a particular aspect of AD.  The question I posted was not a generic "help me with AD", it was a pretty specific question.

If you have a specific book or suggestion in mind I would appreciate it.  If you do not have a specific suggestion, then simply saying "go read a lot of books dude" is not helpful.  I suggest you do some reading of your own so you get to understand what I was asking about (it was not a question on AD).  You may learn something too.

best regards
Mike

Dude you need to get some books on Active Directory and Windows Server and do a lot of reading, the answers you seek will require hours of study to completely understand.  I might add it ain't gona be fun but can make you some money.

Subject: [ExchangeList] understanding distribution groups

Hi all,

I am trying to get an understanding of Exchange distribution groups.  While I understand these in a cursory way, I just do not seem to be able to find a satisfactry answer to these questions:

a) What is the difference between Domain Local, Global, and Universal distribution groups?  When would I use each type?  When would I *NOT* use each type?

b) What is the difference between a "Security" group and a "Distribution" group exactly?  What does one do that the other does not?  When would I use one versus the other?

(the one thing I do understand is query based distribution groups, and there seems to be plenty of documentation around on that topics).

Everywhere I have looked, it seems that there is a broad assumption that everyone knows what these are.  It is almost as if the differences between these are arbitrary and you can use any of the above in any situation.  Surely that is not true, so I am trying to get a clearer understanding of these concepts.

Any assistance or links to tutorials on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

Mike
