Rick and George:

Do I expect to see 25GB free space, instead of 5GB, for the current
drive after I defrag the database which has 20GB space depends on
eventviewer 1221?

I should say: That's how it works in E2K3 - I THINK it works the same in
E2K but I don't recall with 100% certainty.

Nope, you just tell Exchange to do the move, and it will dismount the
store, move the files (well, technically copy then delete the old file I
think) and then remount the store. You don't manually move anything.

Rick:

I have read that article already. I just don't know should I manually
move that database to the target drive after the database is dismounted?
Or the server will automatically move? Or the old database will stay in
the old drive and the new database started to grow in the target drive?

Thanks for your time!

Sincerely,

Joy

If you have 3 databases, I am assuming you have Exchange Enterprise -
you have a lot more flexibility here. Moving a database will impact
your users insomuch as they won't have access to the mailbox store while
the move is going on. Certainly be sure you have a good backup before
proceeding.

The move itself is simple enough - you basically just tell Exchange
where to move it, and it should happen automatically. See
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/257184/en-us for a nice walkthrough.
Don't manually try moving anything or you will make Exchange unhappy.

On another note, if you have that much free space in the existing DBs,
something else is chewing up your space (remember that white space is
used by new mail before the store should continue to grow). You
certainly could consider an offline defrag with that much white space -
especially the one with 20 gigs.

It's really not a big operation to do the move - but better that you are
really familiar with the steps before undertaking them. Best of luck!

Rick:

I saw you have helped a lot of people. Thanks for your questions and
any input.

I have exchange 2000. The current drive has three database plus all the
log files. The total space is 60GB. Now just has 5GB left. The
database I plan to move has 10GB .edb file and 3GB .stm file. The new
drive has 70GB total and has 37GB free.

This is a very old server. I haven't done offline defragmentation for
years. Depends on most people from our group and the other resource, I
feel I'd better not to do it. Correct me if I'm wrong. I did find in
the EventViewer, the eventide 1221, I have 7GB, 20GB, 8GB free space for
three databases.

What version of Exchange? Depending on the answer to that, you are
either moving the entire database to the new, bigger drive, or you could
be adding an additional mailbox store and just moving that mailbox.

Really need a bit more info - how big is the drive your database is
currently on and how big is your target?

What caused you to run out of space? Was it just the Exchange database,
or log files, or something else entirely?

I need to move one of the mailboxes to a different drive since the
current one doesn't have enough space. Microsoft has several articles
tell I need to change the database location. What should I do with the
database file on the current drive? If the answer is move the new
drive, will it be overwrite?

I'm sure this is a very easy question for most of you. I have searched
on google. I haven't got the answer yet. Thanks for your input!
