If you have exchange 2003 SP1 stalled then yes you shouldn't have to type
domain name\user name. Only user name will work.

Hello everyone,
As it is obvious in active directory environment you need to login using \
if required such domain\username. It obviously indicates in OWA that
domain\username. So I've been telling all users to do it. But someone
mistakenly typed / and discovered that it works. Would someone confirm this
for me if there are some wrong settings in my server side?
