Your email domain is not depend on AD domain Name. You can create any SMTP 
address for AD user account.
Email Domain Name depend on DNS server MX record, you have to put correct email 
domain in the MX record.

I am a newbie designated to deploy Exchange 2003 just for email usage.
We don't have Active Directory in place. Our registered domain name is If I use a subdomain, let say as root-domain for
AD, can I still have the email address in the format user@xxxxxxxxx,
instead of user@xxxxxxxxxxxx?

I was thinking about an MX record on the public DNS server as
"". Will this work?
