Hello,
I was trying to turn off a NIC from the DMZ (wanting to get OWA working to this
server from the FE). Tried to stop the WWW service and it has been in pending
mode for over an hour. Any suggestions?

Yes this is possible. You will need an MX record for
office.company.local.domain. You will also need to create an email
alias of username@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx for each mailbox in the
child domain. I think there is something you might need to do with
recipient policies, but I don't remember.
