That situation is expected. You removed the old mailstores, but not the
directory entries that tell your clients where to find their mail data.
For all of your users, I assume you have no mailboxes at this time. If you
do, please keep them out of this process or they will be likely unhappy. I
would also suggest an export of the users mail addresses incase something
becomes different later and you need to reference a known copy. LDIFDE
should be fine unless you're comfortable with VBS.
Open ADUC on a machine with the Exchange extensions installed. Find all of
your users and remove the Exchange attributes from them (right click etc).
Only the mailbox users that are on the old server (red2). If you use the
Exchange search options you can search for all users on that server.
Once you've done that, you'll need to wait for replication. I would suggest
that at this time you clean up your Active Directory of any trace of that
old server in the topology (this was a DC?) and for Exchange application.
You can reference the KB articles at http://support.microsoft.com/ for
information about how to remove the first server, how to completely remove
Exchange server from your org (you don't want to do all of that by the way)
and how to manually remove an Exchange server. Since it's no longer online,
you basically need to clean up manually.
Once you're sure that you've properly removed red2 and red2 only, made sure
that public folders are properly working, you have proper backup/restore
processes in place, and you've sacrificed a network chicken, you're ready to
add user mailboxes to the new server (blue1). To do that, select the users
in ADUC on a workstation with Exchange extensions, right-click, select
Exchange tasks. Follow the wizard. Wait for replication and test the
access via Outlook.

That is just it. We did not add another one. We took the old Server offline
and broke the box at least 3 months before the new one came online. They
were never both online at the same time.
At present, we only have one Exchange Server - Blue1 - the new one.
Having said that, the W2003 Server has always been there. Both during the
era of the old Exchange Server, and now. So it has spanned two Exchange
Servers - one gone, one active. The W2003 Server is the DHCP, DNS Server and
the default gateway to all the client machines.
I am thinking that maybe this has something to do with some sort of cached
info in the AD on the W2003 Machine that was replicated to the Exchange
Server.

Got more info for you. Pretty Messy. Done everything you said to do. No Joy.
I went into AD Users and Computers on the Exchange Server. Checked the
properties sheet on my account an went into exchange general. Mailbox store
was pointing to the old Server = red2/first storage group/mailbox
store(red2)
Looked in the System Manager and found Red2 (the old exchange server) listed
there under server b4 Blue1 (the new Exchange Server). Only the Protocols
and First Storage Group are there and they both empty (no listings of any
sort on the details pane of Red2). All the required entries were there for
Blue1.
Then went into AD Users and Computers on the W2003 DC, checked the
properties sheet on my account. There are no any Exchange tab.
I tried deleting Red2 from the Exchange System manager on Blue1, no joy.
Hope this additional info helps in pointing us in the right direction.

You may have to go into your DNS and manually edit the dns record for old
exchange server and point it to the ip address for your new exchange server.
Otherwise delete the Outlook profile from the desktop. When Outlook is
opened it will prompt for the username and exchange server.

Hi Simon,
Done that. All clients are DHCP clients. No where is the old DC referenced.
Only when I click on check name. Also tried pinging it. Got "host unknown".
Pinged the new Exchange Server got reply.
The new Exchange Server is called blue1 and the old one red2. Red2 was
offline for a few months b4 blue1 came into production. We only had the
W2003 server running during this period we did not install Exchange on it.
I cannot understand why clients are resolving to a non existent Server. Is
there something I have to check or clean in AD?

Hi Shannon,
New Problem.
Decided to configure Outlook using the Corporate Option in order to set up
the e-mail accounts on exchange. When I click on the "check name" tab, it
resolves to an old DC that has been taken out of service over 6 months ago.
It is not resolving to the new Exchange Server. When I then fire up Outlook,
it tells me that the Info Store can not be opened.
I have cleaned out the registry on both the Exchange Server and the W2003
Server DC, but no joy.
How to go about resolving this?

Since your active directory domain and your external domain are the same,
every e-mail enabled user should have a valid e-mail address then. All you
would need to do is allow port 25 traffic from the internet to your exchange
server, change DNS records if needed. Then users could use the same e-mail
address for internal and external communications. If your Exchange server
has never been setup to accept messages from outside the organization, I
would recommend getting a good e-mail scanning anti-virus software.

Hi All,
I have an exchange server that we use for our internal e-mails. For external
e-mails, I have set up individual Internet e-mail accounts within Outlook
for each user including myself.
The Exchange Server sits on a W2K Advanced Server Machine and not on the DC
which is W2003 Server machine The DC also acts as a RRAS Server.
How can I set it up so that all external mails (in & out)is handled by the
Exchange Sever so that I can get rid of the individually set up Internet
E-Mail Accounts on the client machines
